Social Anxiety and Employment

Social Anxiety and Employment Social Anxiety Disorder Coping Print Social Anxiety and Employment What Its Like to Be an Employee With Social Anxiety Disorder By Arlin Cuncic Arlin Cuncic, MA, is the author of Therapy in Focus: What to Expect from CBT for Social Anxiety Disorder and 7 Weeks to Reduce Anxiety. Learn about our editorial policy Arlin Cuncic Updated on June 24, 2019 Social Anxiety Disorder Overview Symptoms & Diagnosis Causes Treatment Living With In Children Tetra Images - Jamie Grill/Brand X Pictures Social anxiety disorder (SAD) can interfere with employment. Attending school, college, or university, going on job interviews, and performing in a work environment can be difficult if you live with this disorder. Those who do find themselves maintaining employment may still struggle daily. If you find yourself in this position, one thing that can help is to share how you feel. By the same token, reading stories from other people going through the same thing can be helpful. Its one thing to read facts and figures about a disorder; it is completely different to see the world through the eyes of a person living with the problem on a daily basis. Perhaps this story will sound like your own life, or maybe you have your own unique details to add. At the very least, it may help you feel less alone, or understand others with social anxiety better. The following is a fictional first-person account  of someone with social anxiety disorder and is  not based on any particular person.   A Day in the Life of Someone with SAD Mornings are usually not too bad. At least I know that I wont have to talk to anyone until I leave the house. However, if I have something that I have to do that day that involves talking to people, or even worse, some sort of public speaking, well then the day is already shot. I cant concentrate on anything else because I am worrying about what lies ahead. If I have phone calls that I need to make I usually avoid them. Put them off. What if I call and the other person is too busy? What if I am calling at a bad time? So, I ask myself, What would be the ideal time to call this person that I would not be a bother? I might choose a time like 10:00 a.m. and then worry about it until I make the call. Driving to work is not terrible. Some of the drive  I am able to do on single lane roads, which is nice because I know that nobody is going to pull up alongside me and look at me. Intersections are the worst. I never pull right up beside another car because then the person might look at me. Do I smile? Look straight ahead? Its just easier to stay a car length back. If I have to get gas, I make sure to go to a gas station with which I am familiar. I wouldnt want to make a fool of myself by pulling up to the wrong pump. I always choose self-serve over full-serve. That way I dont have to talk to anybody. Every once in a while, I decide that I need to get a haircut â€" one that doesnt involve cutting my own hair (and the disastrous results that can involve). The problem with getting a haircut is that you have to talk to the hairdresser. Usually, I answer in one-word sentences and eventually, she stops trying to talk to me. I dont have anything interesting to say anyway, so its better that she and I share the time in silence. Sometimes she will talk with her colleagues because clearly, I have become too boring. Getting back to work â€" yes I do work. Have done so for my whole adult life. I know that some people with SAD do not work. I guess I dont have it as bad as them. As much as I would love to just stay in my house and never leave, I do have to earn an income, and work is the only way I have found to do so. I have had different kinds of jobs, each with their own problems. As much as people will tell you that you can find a job that doesnt involve people â€" thats not true. If you work with animals, you usually have to talk to their owners. If you work on a computer, you usually have to talk to other people about what you are doing. Even jobs that really dont involve people do still involve other employees. And lunch hours. And water cooler talk. Those times that I do eat lunch with others are a challenge. Sometimes I am OK and make it through fine. Other times, it feels like I will never get through the meal. My hands are shaking so bad the food can barely stay on my fork. It always feels like I am narrowly averting disaster. That next time, I will surely spill my drink or just not be able to eat at all. Other people might spend their days conversing with friends. I dont. I know people, but I dont really have any friends. Its not that people dont like me, they just dont really know me. Its hard to get to know me when I am so anxious all the time. People have tried to be my friend, but I dont reciprocate because of my anxiety. I dont call because I am afraid. Eventually, the person stops trying. If its a day that I dont have to work, and I dont have any other plans, then I usually stay home. Which is good because I dont feel as anxious, but bad because I do eventually get lonely. I think about everyone else out doing fun and exciting things with friends and family. I start to get down if I spend too much time alone. Its a paradox really; Im afraid to be with people, but at the same time I get down being alone. If on a particular day, like I mentioned before, I have a specific engagement where I have to speak, I will worry about it all day. If its a speech I have to give, I can worry about it for weeks. Or months. And when I say worry, I mean panic. Full-blown panic attacks in the middle of the night. Just in anticipation of the event. For the most part, I try to avoid these types of responsibilities. But life sometimes throws them at you. Grocery shopping is not too bad. I keep a  list in hand, my head down, and shop as fast as I can so that I can get out of the store. If I see someone I know, I usually do my best to avoid having to talk to that person. What will I say? They will think I am boring. The conversation will dwindle and it will be awkward. Better just to avoid it altogether. I usually eat dinner alone and then maybe watch television. I dont usually have plans in the evening during the week. Or on the weekend, come to think of it. In order to have plans, you have to have friends. Once in a while, I will do something with my family. Once in a while doesnt happen very often. I dont think I choose to be this way. I dont know why anyone would choose to be this way. Its a horrible way to live. I would rather have a problem that was very specific, like a fear of spiders or fear of heights. That is something people can understand and it doesnt affect every aspect of your life. That is what this does. It affects every part of my life. Because spending the rest of my life alone is not really a life. When my head hits the pillow, the thoughts return. What did I do wrong today? How  did I embarrass myself? What do I have to do tomorrow? How can I get out of it? If I am lucky, I fall asleep right away. I have found that exercise helps to tire me out and lets me fall asleep more easily. If I havent exercised, it can take hours to fall asleep. The thoughts just keep churning through my head and dont relent. I want to get help but I dont know how. Nobody knows about the inner turmoil I go through. They might have noticed a bit of anxiety here and there, but for the most part, I keep it pretty well hidden. Its not like other mental illnesses where there is an impact on others in my life; its only me that gets the brunt of it. I just keep on taking it because I dont know how to get over it. There are some rays of hope, though. I know I havent tried everything to fight my fears and Im not willing to give up just yet. I do believe that meeting other people like myself could make a difference. If I could join a therapy group specifically to help people with social anxiety disorder (SAD), then at least I would know everyone else there was dealing with the same problems. It would feel less awkward because we would all be in the same boat. In the meantime, I continue to read all I can. I may try another self-help program or one day work up the courage to make an appointment with my doctor. Its hard. Every day is hard, but I keep going knowing that it will be better someday. I am better now than I used to be, and I think that just comes with age. I do think that the more I expose myself to social situations, the more comfortable I will become. In some ways, I just lack the practice because fear has kept me away. I know that there are others who have much worse social anxiety than me. There are probably some who have it milder as well. I just know that mine is impairing enough that it affects everything I do on a daily basis. That really is the struggle â€" that the fear and anxiety never leaves me because our world is so social. A  Word From Verywell This fictional account reflects someone likely living with a mild to moderate level of social anxiety â€" this person is able to function in most areas of life but lives with anxiety under the surface. There are many different levels of social anxiety, so your situation could look very different. Whatever your symptoms, know that there are others who are also struggling with the same issues and that you are not alone. Effective treatments do exist for SAD, if you are willing to reach out to get help. The 7 Best Online Anxiety Support Groups

Never Trump Should We Refuse to Vote for Donald Trump

Should #NeverTrump conservatives - those opposed to the presidential nomination of reality television star Donald Trump - refuse to vote for Trump even if it means electing Hillary Clinton as the next president? Here we will explore the origins of the Never Trump movement, and why many conservatives will refuse to vote for Trump in 2016. Against Trump In January, 2016 conservative magazine National Review released an issue dedicated to opposing Donald Trump for President. This was the first major publication to come out against Trump in a major way with articles from conservatives William Kristol, Mona Charen, John Podhoretz, Glenn Beck and a dozen others detailing their opposition to his candidacy. The issue was notable for dropping shortly before the Iowa Caucuses kicked of the presidential race. After the Against Trump issue, National Review was subsequently removed as a debate sponsor for an upcoming GOP primary debate. While the magazine made a definite splash, it was ultimately written off as the last gasp of the dying Republican establishment. #NeverTrump A month later - after Trump won contests in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada - the #NeverTrump movement caught on when Aaron Gardner tweeted out the hashtag flagging an article written by talk radio host Erick Erickson. I reached out to Gardner - a political consultant and writer based out of Colorado - for background on the history of the movement: #NeverTrump began as a line in the sand for movement/activist conservatives. Erick Erickson wrote a post detailing why he could never vote for Trump, much of which echoed my own thoughts for months, as expressed in Twitter. I tagged the post shortly after it was published with the #NeverTrump hashtag and worked to get it trending on a Friday night. The response was amazing and over the next 12 hours there were over 500,000 tweets, #NeverTrump was trending worldwide, and the altright [Trump-backers] freaked out. They started to counter with #AlwaysTrump and got their anonymous accounts, alleged to be Russian troll accounts, to push the tag. Twitter took the tag off of the trending lists, but it has continued getting 100s of thousands of tweets per day. Unfortunately, certain forces aligned with Ted Cruz also worked to diminish #NeverTrump as they saw it hurting Cruz and helping Marco Rubio. If only theyd had a bit of forethought. The hashtag started trending on Twitter and would become the battle cry for anti-Trump forces throughout the remainder of the republican contests. The movement did not back a specific candidate to oppose Trump and instead emphasized strategic voting and partnerships to deny Trump the required number of delegates and force a contested convention. The first candidate to embrace the concept was Marco Rubio ahead of the March 15th contests when he signaled to his supporters that they should back Gov. John Kasich in the winner-take-all primary in Ohio. (The favor was not returned by Kasich or Ted Cruz, and Rubio lost crucial Florida and dropped out of the race.) On Team Never Trump, Mitt Romney - the 2012 Republican nominee - backed Rubio, Kasich, and Ted Cruz in different states on the same day. It wouldnt be until late April when an alliance of sorts would be formed between the two remaining non-Trump candidates. As Trump was on his way to dominating 6 contests in the northeast, and finally winning beyond just a plurality, it became obvious that the only way to stop Trump would be through an open convention that led to multiple rounds of voting by the GOP delegates. With polls showing Trump building leads in key upcoming contests in Indiana and California, Cruz and Kasich struck a deal. Cruz announced he would pull out of competing in New Mexico and Oregon, while Kasich announced he would not compete in Indiana. Both made the case for denying Trump a first-round ballot victory, but the late-forming coalition may be a case of too little, too late. Trump, as Republican Nominee So, what of the Never Trump movement if Trump wins the Republican nomination and sets up a battle against Hillary Clinton? For many, the Never Trump movement takes the first word very literally. Never. A refusal to back Trump extends beyond the primary and into the general election. Writing for Bloomberg View, columnist Megan McArdle shared the responses she received from Never Trump supporters: The #NeverTrump voters are appalled, repulsed, afraid and dismayed that their party could have let this happen. They wrote in the strongest possible language, and many were adamant that they would not stay home on Election Day, but in fact would vote for Hillary Clinton in the general and perhaps leave the Republican Party for good. These sentiments are widely held within activists conservative circles, and polls show that Donald Trump would get obliterated in a general election. But do people who are part of the Never Trump camp now stay in the Never Trump camp if the only other option is Hillary Clinton? Do they change their minds? Certainly, some will make the reluctant case for Trump. Some will support Trump and not admit it. But I would expect a fairly large contingency of Never Trump backers to remain opposed to Trump, even vocally. Many will try to guilt-trip Trump opponents into backing the reality show star or else effectively support Hillary Clinton. But conservatives should not feel guilt-tripped into backing down. And heres why: Conservatism: It isnt just that Trump is insufficiently conservative. Does even a single conservative bone in his body exist? He certainly doesnt speak the language. His liberal political history is well-known, and his current political opportunism apparent.Competence: This isnt a case of Romney/McCain/Trump arent conservative enough, Im staying home. Those men were competent. Conservatives werent thrilled with the idea of Jeb Bush being the nominee, but Jeb is at least competent, admirable, and accomplished. Trump has no interest in learning even the basics of the issues, promising only to learn them if he gets elected first.Character: What can be said about Trumps character? His behavior during the campaign is enough to give him general election nightmares, but his tabloid past is enough to make Bill Clinton blush. While the media has generally been soft on Trump, that will change in a general election. Character matters.Temperament: Trump has not shown the temperament to be presid ent. He too often is vindictive and childish, and threatens everyone who disagrees with him. The President has to be capable of making rational decisions, often quickly. Does that shoe fit? In the end, there is no obligation for anyone to support Trump. It will be his duty to convince enough reluctant people to back him in a general election. This is what Mitt Romney and John McCain and Bob Dole all ultimately failed to do and the blame belonged to them, just as it would belong to Trump. In the end, Never Trump will likely be a success. Hopefully, it succeeds in a primary and Republicans and conservatives nominate an actual Republican or conservative. Unfortunately, its more likely to succeed in a general election.

Is Death Penalty Ever Justified Free Essays

Is Death Penalty ever justified? Capital punishment otherwise, also know as death penalty is a legal process whereby a criminal gets executed as a form of punishment. In the past, Capital punishment had been practised by almost all the societies. However, currently due to the increase in awareness of humans’ rights an approximate of 97 countries had abolished this form of punishment. We will write a custom essay sample on Is Death Penalty Ever Justified or any similar topic only for you Order Now That being said, there are still 58 nations of which includes Singapore, are actively practising it. In my opinion, all human life is to be truly cherished. Who gave us the rights to deprive another man’s life just because he had committed an unlawful act from our perspective? Instead, offenders who truly want to turn over a new leaf should be given a second chance. Reformation, or rehabilitation is one way, but the succession of such methods lies between whether the offender is able to change or not. As it would be a daunting task to really gauge how penitent they are. Hence, rehabilitation cannot guarantee the safety of the rest of society from these uncivilized criminals, whereas capital punishment, being permanent, can. A death penalty can also be served as a strong deterrent against potential criminals. Humans are naturally afraid of death, and would rethink again before offending the law. Death penalty can also be seen, as a way to console the victim’s families, should the criminal committed an act of murder. However, one could also argue that even if justice is served, we can never bring back the dead to life. That being said, I think an alternative punishment could be that instead to just end a person’s life, we should make full use of it. Examples could be having them work for the society, clean the streets or even build roads. Cynically, people will argue that these programmes are even more dangerous, more labour intensive as strict supervision is needed to prevent any sabotage or outbreaks from the offenders. In material terms, for a country like Singapore with scarcity of land space, it would be impossible to simply jail the criminals as there would not be enough prisons. Thus such alternatives may not be quite feasible, however, I believe that in the future technology will help us solve these problems and ultimately exploit these wasted lives. The main reason why capital punishment is still valid today is because people still commit crimes that deserve such a sentence. As our civilization continues to advance exponentially, it does not automatically mean that people have become more disciplined as well. There will always be deviants in society, and punishment must be meted out to them to maintain law and order. On the bottom line, death penalty is justified, but it should be sparingly used. At the end of the day, we are all humans, and we should not deliberately end a person’s life that easily. How to cite Is Death Penalty Ever Justified, Papers

Wachovia and Wells Fargo Merger Proposal Essay Example

Wachovia and Wells Fargo Merger Proposal Paper Negotiation Skills: Proposal My proposal is to analyze the dealings and negotiations between the merge of Wells Fargo Company and Wachovia Corporation. Wachovia Corporation had been in talks with Citigroup regarding the merging of the two companies around the end of September in 2008. By September 28, 2008, Wells Fargo had expressed an interest in obtaining the Wachovia Corporation and by October 3, 2008, announced that they were going to go through with the merge. Wells Fargo had expressed interest in buying Wachovia, but suddenly withdrew from negotiations to buy the company, citing concerns over some of the bank’s loan portfolio. † This was a concern that Wells Fargo Company needed to evaluate on all aspects. The loan portfolio for a bank is a huge part of what the bank has to offer and what they have done for themselves and evaluating the concerns is a very important thing to do. Had Wells Fargo Company walked in to this blindly, they could have ended up in the sa me situation that brought them to Wachovia Corporation in the first place. Mergers happen all the time, and the brunt of this is done through banking and lending companies. The biggest part of this negotiation was that it all happened so quickly. Whether it was a blessing in disguise for Wachovia Corporation to know that there were two large companies (Wells Fargo Company and Citigroup) that both had a large interest in purchasing their banking company. I would like to analyze the negotiations made by Wells Fargo Company and whether or not they made the correct move. Were they were able to accomplish what they wanted and needed to accomplish in this merge?
